Cats and dead things
My cat is at it again. Yesterday she brought in a live ground squirrel. We didn't know it until I noticed the younger cat sitting in the same spot by the sofa for hours. She kept staring under the sofa and not moving. Finally, before I went to bed last night, I suggested to hubby that he lift up the sofa and just see if there's a mouse or bird stuck under there. When he lifted the sofa, the little squirrel ran as fast as it could to one of the boys bedroom. The cat ran behind it and we followed. I gave up after only a few minutes. I chased enough guinea pigs and gerbils - wasn't up for hunting squirrels. So I left it up to the guys and cats. I heard all kind of banging and yelling. Finally - about 45 minutes later, hubby came out with socks on his hands and what looked like a scared stiff ground squirrel. I asked if it was still alive - because it looked like it died in horror. He assured me it was. A few minutes later he came back and said "yeah, I guess it had a heart attack or something. It didn't move when I put it down." Well DUH. The sad thing is, I think they took a picture of it - still thinking it was alive. So, yeah, it was literally scared to death.
This morning, the cats went out for their usual morning hunt. When it was time to come back in, my little hunter brought in a baby sparrow....dead. She brought it over to her food bowl and dropped it in my hands. Eww. I gave her a petting and sweet talk, like I've heard you're supposed to - and passed the poor dead bird to my hubby to dispose of. We should have quite a collection of dead things out back already. Including the petrified frog she brought me last week. I just hope we don't use the Yahoo fertilizer I've seen on the commercials and they all come back to haunt us like Pet Cemetery.
